Using themes you can easily change the appearance of your website.

In this guide you will learn how to:

  • Create a new theme.
  • Change the appearance of basic elements.
  • Make your theme adapt to different layout modes.

What You Need To Know

This guide is written to teach you how to theme Jaws, it will not teach you:

  • HTML
  • CSS
  • How to upload files

Add links to sites that will.

Creating Your First Theme

You have two options when creating a new theme, you can either start from scratch, or you can copy an existing theme - Monologue is a good one, because it’s a fairly simple theme.

For this guide we’ll copy Monologue to create our theme - if you want to start from scratch, you can probably work it out by looking at the existing themes.

Step 1: Copying The Base

All themes are kept in the themes directory of your Jaws installation, to create a new theme you need to copy the theme your basing the new one on - choose one which is similar to what you want to do - and then name it how you want the new theme to be named.

Under Linux, and other Unix like systems, the command to do this is usually:

cp -R themes/monologue themes/mytheme

To be continued…
